The Bertha Cocktail

Dona Berta was a semi-famous Mexican woman who owned her own bar called Bertha's Bar around the 1940's.  Her signature drink, a Tequila Limonada, was crisp, refreshing, and very popular.  Her fans named it, simply, the "Bertha."

"All The Best in Mexico" by Sidney Clark, 1949

"...in Taxco, where a famous tequila cocktail called the "Bertha" is an established feature of life..."

Fast forward to modern times, and you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere listing this drink on a menu.

You can find this drink on the list at The Empire Room (see earlier reference).  Have a try.  It's a mighty fine libation:

The Bertha
1 3/4 oz. Partida Reposado Tequila
1/2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. home-made grenadine
Directions: Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass.
Garnish: long grapefruit twist

**home-made grenadine: Over a stove-top, dissolve 1 part POM pomegranate juice and 1 part water.  Once dissolved, simmer for 10 mins.  Add in several drops of orange flower water, chill, and serve.***

The Evolutionary Margarita

The Margarita.  That perfect blend of sweet, tart, and booze.  The booze - tequila.  Good tequila.  What would happen if this drink was reimagined to include some not-so-usual ingredients.  Here's what happened when I tried my hand  at it:

Evolutionary Margarita

2 oz. Corzo Reposado Tequila

1/2 oz. Grand Marnier

1/2 oz. agave nectar

3/4 oz. fresh lime juice

6-8 small chunks of your choice of pepper (yellow, red, or orange)

Process: In a mixing glass, muddle the pepper in the agave nectar and lime juice.  Then add remaining ingredients and shake well with ice.  Strain over ice into rocks glass.

Garnish: pepper "flag" and lime "bow-tie" & optional salt-rim.
