Booze Briefs:
What's New?

Books & Bartenders
Boy, if there were a season for cocktail book releases, this would surely be it.
Compendium - a concise, yet comprehensive compilation of a body of knowledge.
-Wikepedia, the free Encyclopedia
Good pal and mentor Gary Regan recently released his "Bartender's Gin Compendium" to raving reviews. This book is for bartenders and enthusiasts alike, with humorous anecdotes and tasty recipes to boot.
Click here for more info on Gaz's book and to buy yourselves a copy.
Another good pal and amazing characaturist Jill DeGroff just released her lovely book, "The Lush Life: Portraits from the Bar." In it you'll find some of your favorite characters from behind the bar, and the stories that make up their quirky lives.
You'll want to follow this link HERE to grab a copy.
I've known Brian Van Flandern for several years now. We've worked together in several capacities, and I highly admire his work. I also admire the fact that he put out a cocktail recipe book. Modeled as a coffee table book, Vintage Cocktails is filled with classy pics and fun recipes. It's a great holiday or anyday gift for your favorite tippler.
This LINK will transport you to a page in which you may purchase this book.
The USBG NY Chapter
Goings-on...
October Mixer
Pranna was the setting for our USBGNY mixer that occurred this past Monday. We were educated by Mr. Van Flandern about cocktail book writing, and our thirst was quenched by Compass Box whisky and the magnificent cocktails created by the fine bar staff at Pranna.
Be sure to get yourselves over to this fine establishment. On your way, stop by the liquor store and pick yourselves up a nice bottle of Compass Box Hedonism, Peat Monster, and/or their newest bottling, Spice Tree.
You will NOT be disappointed.
Looking ahead...
Just a peek at what's in store for USBGNY members in the coming weeks:
Whiskyfest NYC in November
November mixer w/ Rhum Clement Creole Shrubb
Trip to Philadelphia
NY/Chicago bonding and volunteering in January
Educational experiences with experts/master blenders/distillers,etc.
And more...
What a great way to bond, network, and learn from your fellow bartender compatriots!

Business Class:

The Navio Remedy
On Friday, Oct. 23rd, Navio Artisans Collective (founded by Charlie Barmonde and Seth Rainville) hosted an evening of "culinary and visual arts" in historic New Bedford, MA. Guests were treated to a 4-course dinner at Cork, deserts by Sallycakes, and a signature cocktail by yours truly.
Another added bonus - you got to take your plate home with you. That's right, Charlie and Seth designed 30 unique, handmade plates that each guest was able to take home with them.
For more info on Navio Artisans Collective, click HERE. It's their facebook page. Join the group. Do it. Now. Please.
Want to know how to make the "Navio Remedy" at home? Well, here 'ya go:
Navio Remedy
1 tsp. Roots Remedies Energy Tonic 1 1/2 oz. Spiced Rum 1/4 oz. Maraschino Cherry Liqueur 1 oz. Apple Cider 1 tsp. Agave Nectar 1 fingernail ground Cinnamon Juice of 1/2 of a Lime

Dulce Dominicana
Do you feel that chill in the air? Is winter coming at too quick of a pace for you? Sit back, relax, and imagine the warm sand beaches of the Dominican Republic underneath your derieres.
I recently created this drink for Brugal Rum, a fine brand with several bottlings that each have their very own disctinct characteristics (great for cocktails and sipping).
Enjoy:
DULCE DOMINICANA
1 oz. Brugal Anejo or Brugal Extra Viejo 1/2 oz. Navan Vanilla liqueur 1/4 oz. St. Elizabeth's Allspice liqueur 1 cup apple cider Pinch of whole cloves Pinch of star anise 3 orange slices Directions: Heat ingredients, except for alcohol, over the stove-top until simmering. Add to mug containing alcoholic ingredients, straining out spices and fruit. Garnish: one of the stewed orange slices and a fresh star anise |
