Quickie Bar Visit:

Cork Wine & Tapas Bar
New Bedford, MA

Nearly two years ago, a young couple, we'll call them Jonathan and Megan, said their vows at a small chapel in downtown New Bedford, MA.  This was the same chapel that was mentioned in Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," and it was the same chapel that Melville himself frequented during his time in this southeastern Massachussets coastal town.  The Seamen's Bethel was used during the hay-day of the New Bedford whaling industry; where all the great seamen and their significant others went to pray.

Fast forward 150 years and you have Cork, a trendy wine bar just down the block from the Seaman's Bethel, right in the thick of historic downtown New Bedford.  Cork sits among the cobblestone streets, 18th century two-story buildings, and towering fishing boat masts; a city that exclaims revitalization, New Bedford is very close to my heart (too mushy?).

On my last visit up to the in-laws, we made it a point to visit this happening new place.  Open for about a year, Cork sees all sorts of crowds - from the post Zeiterion Theatre crowd, to retirees, to College grads, to blue collar workers.  On one hand, the prices don't necessarily reflect the economy, but on the other, to make a place like this work, you need to charge a certain amount for drinks.  I tried their signature Red Sangria ($8 - still cheaper than NYC!).  The bartender told me it included brandy, triple sec, apricot brandy, red wine, and a "bunch of juices."  Undeterminable juices aside, the drink was not half bad.  It was very easy to drink, and I could see how it could be a very pleasing libation to the masses.

Cork has an extensive tapas menu, which seemed very innovative and tasty.  On my next visit, I'll make sure to try the grub.

This summer, on your next trip up to Newport, Providence, Cape Cod, or even Martha's Vineyard (it's a direct ferry ride to the island), stop by New Bedford, MA (located pretty much in between those two locales); the historical significance and nightlife of this city will astonish you and leave you wanting more.

Cork is located at 90 Front St., New Bedford, MA

USBG Logo Feb 09

"Oh Boy" you must be saying to yourselves, "More USBG Stuff!?!"

You better believe it!  I'm promoting the heck out of this.  We're in full swing, and I'm so excited about what we have coming up:

This week we launched the Master Accreditation 3-tier testing program officially sanctioned by the USBG.  It's your chance to become an accredited "Master Mixologist."  We all know that eduation in our industry is key.  The good folks at Beam Global were there to give us a very informative tequila seminar and tasting.  Nine tequilas.  Yeah.  No joke.

May 1st is our qualifying competition for the National Cocktail Competition to be held in San Francisco on May 12th.  Come out to the World Bar on Friday, May 1st to see some of our local chapter's best bartenders compete for their chance to go to San Fran.  Winner of the National competition goes to Germany for the World Cocktail Competition.

Our MC is Dale DeGroff.  'Nuff said.

Will I be competiting, you ask?  Heck yeah.

Let me know if you'll be joining us....

PLUS:

The New York Bar Show is coming up this June 14th and 15th, and we're going to have a large presence there this year.  Just to give you a sneak peek:

- USBG official area with demo stage.
- tables for recruitment of new USBG NY chapter members.
- master accreditation testing area.
- seminars led by the best of the best in the biz.
- "So You Call Yourself A Bartender" quiz show!
I've said too much already...

Stay tuned for the latest and greatest, and as always:
